Curriculum - Humanities

MIDDLE SCHOOL HUMANITIES
Teacher: Ms. Kerry Powers

Humanities: the learning or literature concerned with human culture.

English Language Arts and Social Studies complement one another in this course.  Reading and writers' workshops and Social Studies units are aligned with the New York State curriculum guidelines.

Through read-aloud, book clubs, and independent reading, students' love of reading is nurtured and supported.  Students read various genres to discover personal tastes, as well as to develop critical analysis.  Writing projects include poetry, historical fiction, literary essays, persuasive speeches, and news articles.  Social Studies units are developed around essential questions, as students are encouraged to become historians.  Primary source documents, field trips, historical fiction, textbooks, and audio/visual teaching tools are routinely used to broaden students' historical thinking skills.

Twice a year all middle school students create and present interdisciplinary projects encompassing subject matter from art, science, and humanities.  8th grade students create and present an exit project to demonstrate their research and historical thinking skills.
